Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper optional for extra heat

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Stir in ketchup, honey, bourbon, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, onion powder, ground mustard, cinnamon, dark brown sugar, soy sauce, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix until well combined.
  • Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and black pepper according to your preference.

Notes

You can omit the brown sugar completely for a less sweet sauce.
