Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Airtight container for storage

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke optional, for a smoky flavor
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. This step ensures the base of the sauce is rich and smooth.
  • Add the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, and brown sugar to the melted butter. Stir well to combine and dissolve the sugar.
  • Incorporate the Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir until all the spices are well mixed into the sauce.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow the sauce to cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes. This simmering process thickens the sauce and deepens its flavor.
  • If you want an extra smoky flavor, add the liquid smoke. Season the sauce with salt to taste, adjusting to your preference.

Notes

For the best results, allow the sauce to simmer slowly, letting the flavors meld together. This slow-cooking process intensifies the sauce’s taste, making it richer and more flavorful.
