Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Guinness beer or other stout beer
  • 1 cup no sugar added ketchup
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional

Instructions

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, pour in the Guinness beer. Allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes to reduce slightly and intensify the flavor.
  • Add the no sugar added ketchup, maple syrup, brown sugar, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, smoked paprika, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using) to the saucepan.
  • Stir well to combine all the ingredients. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Add more brown sugar for sweetness or apple cider vinegar for tanginess, according to your preference.
  • Once the sauce has thickened to your liking and the flavors have melded together, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly.

Notes

If you feel the sauce is too acidic, add baking soda as needed.
