Equipment

  • Medium-sized saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider or red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 dashes hot pepper sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional, for heat
  • 1 tablespoon butter optional, for richness
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • First, take a medium-sized saucepan and combine ketchup, apple cider or red wine vinegar, and brown sugar. Stir well to dissolve the sugar completely.
  • Next, add honey, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, black pepper, hot pepper sauce, soy sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if you like it spicy). Mix thoroughly to combine all the ingredients.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. The sauce will thicken as it cooks.
  • For an extra layer of richness, stir in 1 tablespoon of butter. This step is optional but highly recommended for a smoother texture and richer taste.
  • After simmering, taste the sauce and add salt as needed. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the sauce cool to room temperature.

Notes

Add more or less water as needed to thicken or thin the sauce.
