Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Small skillet
  • Immersion blender (or regular blender)
  • Wooden spoon
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 3 jalapenos finely chopped (remove seeds for less heat)
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper optional, for extra heat
  • 1/2 tsp liquid smoke optional, for smoky flavor

Instructions

  • In a small skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of oil and sauté the finely chopped jalapeños, onion, and garlic until softened (about 4-5 minutes). Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and molasses.
  • Stir in smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper (if using), and liquid smoke (if using). Add the sautéed jalapeños, onion, and garlic.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for about 25-30 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and flavors are well combined.
  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the mixture until it reaches your desired consistency. If using a regular blender, allow the mixture to cool slightly before blending.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce cool. Transfer it to a sterilized glass jar or an airtight container. The sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
