Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Stirring spoon
  • Measuring spoons
  • Garlic press (optional)

Ingredients

  • 6 ripe tomatoes diced
  • 2 jalapeños seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar optional
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro or basil for garnish optional

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, until it becomes translucent. Then, add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Once the onions and garlic are softened, stir in the diced tomatoes, finely chopped jalapeños, and tomato paste. Make sure to mix everything thoroughly.
  • Add the cumin powder, smoked paprika, and salt. Stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce seems too acidic, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar to balance the flavors.
  • Allow the sauce to thicken as it simmers. If you want a smoother texture, you can blend the sauce using a hand blender or let it stay chunky for a more rustic feel.
  • Once the sauce has reached your desired consistency, remove it from heat. Garnish with fresh cilantro or basil, and your Jalapeño Tomato Sauce is ready to serve!

Notes

I always recommend using fresh, ripe tomatoes for the best flavor, but in a pinch, canned tomatoes can work too. Fresh ingredients will give the sauce a brighter, more authentic taste.
