Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke mesquite flavor
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Juice of half a lemon

Instructions

  • In your saucepan, mix together ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and honey. Heat over medium until well combined.
  • Stir in the liquid smoke, minced garlic, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let your sauce simmer gently for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the pan.
  • Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, remove from heat and stir in the Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice. This will add a nice tangy finish.

Notes

When cooking the sauce, it’s important to let it simmer slowly to meld the flavors together. Rushing this process can lead to a less cohesive flavor profile, so patience really is key!
