- 2 cups diced watermelon
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or another type of vinegar for acidity
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or mustard powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Start by dicing the watermelon into small cubes, removing any seeds if necessary.
In a medium saucepan, combine the diced watermelon, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the watermelon breaks down and the sauce thickens slightly.
Once the sauce has cooked down, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. Transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. You can also use an immersion blender directly in the saucepan.
Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed with salt and black pepper. You can also add more brown sugar or vinegar to balance the flavors if desired.
These ingredients can be adjusted according to your personal taste preferences.
☀ Hot sauce or red pepper flakes for heat.
☀ Liquid smoke for a smoky flavor.
☀ Spices such as paprika, cumin, or chili powder for additional flavor complexity.
