- 1 cup ketchup preferably homemade or high-quality store-bought
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup molasses or honey
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons mustard yellow or Dijon
- 1 teaspoon paprika sweet or smoked
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper adjust for heat preference
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup bourbon for a smoky twist
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke optional for extra smokiness
- 2 teaspoons tomato paste for extra thickness
In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup, apple cider vinegar, molasses or honey, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mustard, and tomato paste.
Add paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, cumin, allspice, and cinnamon. Mix well.
Pour in bourbon and liquid smoke, if using. Whisk everything together until well combined.
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer while stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. If you prefer a thicker consistency, let it simmer a bit longer.
If you love experimenting with flavors, try adding some fruit puree (like mango or peach) to the sauce for a fruity twist.
