Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Garlic presses or knife for mincing
  • Small bowl (if using cornstarch)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional for a spicy kick
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional, for thickening
  • 2 tablespoons water if using cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the olive oil and minced garlic, sautéing until the garlic becomes fragrant and lightly golden.
  • Stir in the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Mix well to combine.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, black pepper, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), and salt. Stir the mixture thoroughly.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Allow it to cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, dissolve the cornstarch in 2 tablespoons of water. Slowly add this mixture to the saucepan, stirring constantly until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.
  • Once the sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool. Transfer to a jar or container with a lid and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Notes

For the best results, allow the sauce to sit for a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator. This resting time lets the flavors meld together, resulting in a richer and more complex taste.
