Instructions
If using fresh blueberries, rinse them thoroughly. If using frozen blueberries, allow them to thaw.
In a saucepan over medium heat, add the blueberries and cook for about 5 minutes until they start to break down, releasing their juices.
Add ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little water to reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, simmer for a few more minutes.
Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning. Add more cayenne pepper for extra spiciness or honey for sweetness if needed.
For a smoother texture, you can use an immersion blender to puree the sauce. Alternatively, transfer it to a blender and blend until smooth. Be cautious, as the sauce will be hot.
Allow the spicy blueberry BBQ sauce to cool before transferring it to a glass jar or airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Use this delicious spicy blueberry BBQ sauce as a glaze for grilled meats, a dipping sauce, or a marinade. It pairs exceptionally well with chicken, pork, or even grilled vegetables.
